The watch Seiko built for the young
I thought my Seiko 5 was a grey watch with a forum nickname. I went looking for the story of the nickname and ended up in the story of the whole line: since 1963, Seiko's answer to a question Swiss watchmaking never cared to ask.
I thought my Seiko 5 was a grey watch with a forum nickname. I went looking for the story of the nickname and ended up in the story of the whole line, which is much bigger than the watch: since 1963 the Seiko 5 has been Seiko's answer to a question Swiss watchmaking never cared to ask. How do you put an automatic on the wrist of a twenty-year-old with little money.
1963, five promises
The first was the Seiko Sportsmatic 5, and the number was a public commitment. Every Seiko 5 would have an automatic movement, day and date in the same window, water resistance, a recessed crown at four o'clock, and a case and bracelet built to take a beating. It was Japan's first automatic with day and date, and Seiko presented the list the way you present a contract: this is the minimum you get, at any price.
1968, and the price
Five years later came the Seiko 5 Sports: more water resistant, reinforced crystal, lume on the hands, a rotating bezel. Built for people who played sports, but what changed the game was the ad. A 5 Sports cost between 10,500 and 15,000 yen, roughly 29 to 42 dollars at the time, five times less than a comparable Swiss watch. Seiko says that is when the line caught on with younger buyers and students, and called it the “go-anywhere watch”.
A generation that had only seen automatics behind glass now had one on the wrist.
2019, Seiko starts over
For decades the 5 Sports was sold in a spread of variations that people who cover the brand describe as dizzying, with no common thread. In September 2019 Seiko reorganized the family in one go: 27 models in the same case, the SKX's, the diver the brand retired that same year; one caliber, the 4R36, with hand winding and hacking seconds; and a new logo, the 5 rotated 45 degrees so it also reads as an S.
The slogan was “Show Your Style”, and the catalogue was split into five styles for five kinds of people. Sports, bold colours on a steel bracelet. Suits, darker and quieter, on a Milanese bracelet. Street, the all-black look with contrast lume, heir to a 2016 collaboration between Seiko and the streetwear label nano.universe. Specialist, classic colours and finishes. Sense, textured dials. Seiko described the relaunch as a symbol of passing mechanical watch culture on to the next generation.
The Seiko that collaborates
It is the only line in the brand that ships with anime characters, streetwear labels and motorbikes on the box. In 2020, seven Naruto and Boruto models, 6,500 each. In 2021, five from One Piece, one per character. In 2022, the New York label Rowing Blazers and Olympic skateboarder Yuto Horigome. In 2023, for the 5 Sports' 55th anniversary, Bruce Lee, Kamen Rider, Ultraseven and Snoopy. In 2024, the street shops BEAMS, from Tokyo, and HUF, from San Francisco. In 2025, Bamford, Pepsi and the Pink Panther. In 2026, the Honda Motocompo, POPEYE magazine and HUF again. Two of those live here at home, the Snoopy and the Pink Panther, but that is a story for another day.
This year's campaign, “Heritage in Motion”, is made with POPEYE, Japan's young men's fashion magazine. The photos have denim jackets, coffee and a dog. In 1968 the ad spoke to students; in 2026 it speaks to twenty-year-olds, again. The Seiko 5 never tried to grow old with its customer.
2021, the Cement Boy

Mine is a child of Street. The SBSA129 launched in September 2021 with a grey dial whose relief mimics bubbles in cured concrete; the line's stated idea was to pair stainless steel with that texture to express the inorganic side of the city, in a watch aimed at a young audience with no boundary of gender or occasion. Grey nylon strap, understated bezel. From across the room nobody notices; up close the dial is the whole argument.
Then the nickname. Every Seiko collector learns early the names the community gave, because Seiko never names anything: the 1976 6309-7290 is the Turtle for its case shape, the SRPB51 the Samurai for its faceted bezel, the SRP307 the Monster for how aggressive the dial looks. None of them appear on a box, a manual or a receipt. I assumed Cement Boy was one more of those.
It isn't. The name was already in the Japanese listings themselves. Rakuten sells it as “セイコー5 スポーツ ストリート スタイル セメント ボーイ”, the English name written straight into katakana. Tokyo retailers like Rook Japan and Japan Online Store put “CEMENT BOY” in capitals in the title, the way you use a product name, not forum slang. It is the only Seiko nickname I know of that was born inside the domestic market. The “moon dial” that circulates among owners, that one is a community nickname, stuck on top of what was already a factory name.
Mine

It joined the collection in March and became a weekend watch: 18 logged wears, 7.3% of my rotation, almost all leisure. From the street into my collection, it was the one chosen to stand for an emblematic category, one that reinvents itself and never grows old.
In person the dial is far more beautiful than any listing photo manages to show, and it is an underrated watch for what it delivers.
